Table 1 Inclusion and exclusion criteria

Pain in neck or back equal to or greater than 3 on an 11-box numerical rating scale for more than three days

Serious pathology (cancer, inflammatory diseases, vertebral fractures, cauda equina)

Manual treatment for the past 2 months (for this particular complaint)

Handicaps preventing normal physical activity

Contraindications to manipulative therapy
